Travelling by taxi is one of the most flexible ways to get around London. Services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year subject to local availability. All taxis take cash and some accept credit and debit cards.
Where to find taxis: London licensed taxis stop at the taxi ranks outside each Heathrow terminal. To find out where to pick up a taxi Terminal 5, view our forecourt map. In central London, taxis can be hailed on the street.Taxi fares
The journey to central London costs between £40 and £70 and takes between 30 minutes and one hour. Journeys which are both inside London and within 20 miles of the airport are priced using the taxi meter. The fare for travel outside London should be agreed beforehand with the driver. For more information, visit the Transport for London taxi fares page.
Illegal taxi services It is illegal for anybody – including a licensed taxi or private hire driver, or operator – to approach you offering a journey for payment. This is known as touting. Always use a licensed private hire operator or taxi. Licensed private hire drivers must have a PCO licence or temporary permit. All licensed private hire vehicles must display the yellow PCO licence disc on the front and rear windscreens. Taxi drivers must wear their distinctive metal driver's badge. All black taxis operating from the official Heathrow taxi rank are licensed.
Accessibility information All licensed taxis are wheelchair accessible. Many include other features to make access easier and to assist those with hearing or sight impediments. Wheelchairs should be secured at all times. Taxis carry assistance dogs at no extra charge. London taxi contact details

Private hire (minicabs)
In the UK, the term minicab is used to refer to a private hire car; that is a car with a driver available for hire only on a pre-booked basis.
They began operating in the 1960s in competition to hackney carriages after a loophole in the law was spotted (although in some areas it is possible to hold a dual hackney/private hire licence). A minicab must be pre-booked, for example, by telephone, internet, or fax; or in person at the registered minicab office. One can book at the time at which one needs the minicab but only with a company registered to accept bookings rather than directly with one of its drivers.
Any minicab journey that isn't booked by phone or in a minicab office is illegal, dangerous and puts you at risk.
Booking your minicab guarantees that your trip will be carried out by a licensed driver in a licensed vehicle. It also means a record is kept of your journey so, in the event of any problem, the driver can be traced.
Even drivers in minicabs lined up outside pubs and clubs are breaking the law if they accept your fare without a prior booking. You must not approach minicab drivers and any minicab driver who approaches you on the street anywhere is acting illegally.
